Types of screed

a brief guide to screed

Below is a brief guide to different types of screed, many others are available

Dont worry though we can advise based on your requirements the most suitable screed for you

Firstly Lets deal with how the screed is bonded to the existing floor surface, there are three basic solutions.

1. Bonded Screed – Are laid directly to the substrate (Exiting floor usually concrete) using a bonding agent or primer.

2. Unbonded Screed –  Are laid onto a membrane, typically visqueen.

3. Floating – Are unbonded screeds, generally laid onto insulation for underfloor heating systems or for a specific thermal or acoustic specification.

Screed Materials

Next lets look at the actual screed material, we will not be be specific as there are multiple variations on thickness, drying, end use etc.

Liquid Screeds

Our preferred material and method of installation, they are modern screeds designed to suit many situations. They are pumped in, self levelling, quick to lay and with fast drying times and produce a high quality finish.

They come in several forms (All to the BS EN 13454 standard).

  • Anhydrite Screed – Calcium Sulphate (Gypsum) based, vast range of applications with varying properties, includinglow minimum thickness, drying times, thermal, acoustic and wearing properties.
  • Cementious Screeds – As the name suggests based on a cement mix, similar properties to the above but in general with less variations available.
  •  Self compacting Concrete – Concrete based, structural flooring can also be a one stop solution to also act as the floor slab.

Other Screeds

  • Sand/Cement Screed – Traditional Screed, laid and levelled by hand – slow to dry
  •  Floor Levelling Compounds – Huge range of products available designed to feather in from 0mm to 12mm. wide variety of applications. They are based on various compounds latex, resin etc and can be used as a floor finish. Uses from a house extension to retail, office, commercial and industrial uses.
